Things to do in Raichur

Tucked away amidst the rocky ruins of the past in the northeastern part of Karnataka, you have Raichur, a city that has seen a rich history unfold before its eyes. Known popularly as Raichur Doab in the past, the city has served as a bone of contention among all the empires that have ruled the Deccan.

As a tourist place, Raichur would not leave you disheartened; it has plenty of places to be explored. Although they might not be much in quantity but they surely have quality. And this is one of the reasons why you should definitely make a visit to the city.

Explore the Historical Past

If you are in the city, you must visit the Raichur Fort, also known as the Hill Fort of Raichur. The fort was originally built by the rulers of Kakatiya dynasty. But due to the many empires that it has been a part of, you can see a lot of Hindu as well as Muslim influence on the architecture of the fort. The walls on the inner side of the fort are made-up of huge blocks of polished rocks and stones without the use of cementing material, and are said to be the work of the Hindus. The outer wall of the fort, made up of a comparatively rougher stone masonry, is considered to be a work of the Muslim rulers.

Inside the fort, you can find a number of old buildings and mosques along with a number of historically important inscriptions. On the eastern side of the fort you would find Jami Masjid, where again you can see the materials used from the temples to form the mosque. The mosque has a cemetery, which is said to contain the graves of some members of the Adil Shahi dynasty.

Within the fort, you also have Ek-Minar-ki-Masjid, built by someone named Amber according to the Persian inscription found there, with similar instances of HIndu influence on the architecture. It consists of two storeys and a single minaret. The mosque is considered to be the oldest place of worship for the Muslims in Raichur.

Explore the River Islands

If you have never had a coracle ride in your life, then this is one thing that you must do while in Raichur. About 30 km from the city is Koormagadde, a beautiful island amidst the Krishna River. The lush green island with picturesque surroundings is accessible only by a coracle. While on the island, you can also pay a visit to the Dattatreya Peeta, for which the island is quite famous. It also has the Samadhi of Sripadavallabha Swami and an ancient watchtower from where you can have a magnificent view of the surroundings.

Next to Koormagadde is another island called Naradagadde, which is equally beautiful. The boat ride is an excellent way to watch the water birds and soak in the nature's lap. The serenity and the calmness is just what a wretched soul needs to escape from the mundane.

Trip to Hutti Gold Mine

Hutti is a small town in Raichur District, located at about 80 km from Raichur, and is home to the Hutti Gold Mines. It is the only gold mine in India at present and perhaps one of the oldest metal mines in the world. It would be interesting to see how one of the most sought after metal in the world get ready to be grabbed by the world. However, if you are planning to visit here, you must take prior permission from the company.

Explore Raichur Thermal Power

Located at about 20 km from Raichur, Raichur Thermal Power Station was the first thermal power plant to be laid in the State. The plant, which is coal-fired electric power station, is said to provide 40% of the total electricity generated in Karnataka. With prior permission you can visit the plant.

Places to eat in Raichur

There are many good eateries in Raichur to satisfy your taste buds like the Chutney's, Hindustan Hotel, Prabhu Vihar and US pizza. If you want to try something unique make sure to ask for Jolada Rotti in any restaurant that serves South Indian cuisine. The roti made of jowar or Sorghum is a specialty of North Karnataka and you must have it once while you are in Raichur.
